South Africa train crash kills at least 26

JOHANNESBURG ? A cargo train collided with a truck carrying farm workers at a crossing in South Africa Friday, killing at least 26 people and leaving bodies strewn across the scene of the accident, officials said.

Provincial spokesman Joseph Mabuza said at least 25 others were injured in the accident in Mpumalanga, an eastern province, which highlighted once more South Africa?s problems with road safety.

The truck driver, who was trying to cross the tracks but apparently miscalculated the speed of the approaching train, was arrested late Friday, he added. The truck was carrying about 50 farm workers when it was hit by the train carrying coal.

Traffic accidents with high death tolls are common in South Africa, and are often blamed on negligent drivers and badly maintained roads.

According to Gary Ronald, a spokesman of the Automobile Association of South Africa, one million crashes are reported annually, leading to about 14,000 fatalities.

Ronald said the country needs to implement a strategy to lower its high level of fatal road accidents.

"To turn it around is going to be one hell of a job," Ronald said.

He added a lack of effective policing and an increased number of vehicles on the roads are some of the factors contributing to the high death tolls.

"South Africa is getting further and further away from a resolution for road safety," Ronald said. "For most South Africans there are no consequences for breaking the law."

Friday?s accident came less than a month after a bus crash left 19 people dead in Johannesburg.

"The accident was messy," said government spokesman Thulani Sibuyi describing heads and limbs severed from bodies. The death toll rose to 26 by late Friday, said Malusi Gigaba, South Africa?s Minister of Public Enterprises.

In 2010, a man driving 14 children to school evaded barriers at a crossing near Cape Town and a train crashed into it, killing 10 of his young passengers. The driver was convicted of murder in the deaths of the students and attempted murder in the case of the four surviving children. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Transportation officials hailed the tough charges and sentence, saying that could help deter reckless driving.

Chocoholics' cravings curbed by European slump | O'Brien Dennis

LONDON |
Thu Jul 12, 2012 1:48pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) ? An assumption that chocolate is a recession-proof treat that consumers continue to buy despite the grim economic outlook was proven wrong on Thursday by the sharpest fall on record in Europe?s quarterly cocoa grind ? an indicator of demand.

Analysts said worsening economic conditions in the euro zone had prompted a sharp slowdown in European demand for chocolate, and the outlook could deteriorate further if the crisis deepens.

The Brussels-based European Cocoa Association (ECA) reported that Europe?s second-quarter cocoa grind tumbled 17.8 percent from the same period last year to 292,551 metric tons, far worse than even the most pessimistic predictions of a fall of up to 12 percent.

?We think the current slowdown in grindings reflects worsening economic conditions in the euro area. If contagion spreads to Spain and Italy, this would have undoubtedly an impact on demand for indulgence products like chocolate,? said Francisco Redruello, senior food analyst at Euromonitor International.

In Switzerland, the world?s top chocolate consumer, domestic chocolate consumption dropped about 8 percent by volume in the first four months of the year, said Franz Schmid, managing director of the association of Swiss chocolate manufacturers Chocosuisse.

Swiss chocolate exports ? of which around two thirds are destined for Europe ? also fell about 12 percent in the January to April period. Schmid said the strong Swiss franc also had hurt exports.

In Germany, one of the world?s largest chocolate consumers, retail sales of chocolate bars by tons fell 7.3 percent on the year in the first four months of 2012, according to the association of German confectionery producers BDSI.

Following the grindings data, benchmark ICE September cocoa futures fell 5 percent to $2,177 per ton 1516 GMT (11.16 a.m EDT).

?It is by far the worst ever result in a quarter since the ECA began reporting these figures. It is reflecting the reality of the demand picture in Europe,? said Javier Almela, head of cocoa purchasing at Spanish cocoa processor Natra Cacao.

In Spain, where unemployment is high and consumers are feeling the pinch, chocolate consumption is expected to suffer.

According to market research firm Mintel?s June chocolate confectionary report, only 44 percent of Spaniards agree that chocolate is value for money, while 43 percent claim that they will cut back on purchasing chocolate if the value of their favorite bars rises.

?Given these responses it is not unreasonable to assume that consumers are likely to be cutting back on purchasing some forms of chocolate,? said Marcia Mogelonsky, global food and drink analyst at Mintel.

SURPLUS LOOMS

Cocoa demand growth typically tracks GDP growth, and with many European countries in recession plus cocoa processing margins being squeezed, analysts had expected a negative grind number ? just not of this magnitude.

Some are adjusting their global supply and demand balance sheet accordingly.

?This transforms a flat supply and demand picture into looking like a meaningful surplus for the year. We are now looking at a 2011/12 surplus of over 100,000 metric tons,? said Jonathan Parkman, joint head of agriculture at broker Marex Spectron.

In May, the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) forecast a 2011/12 global cocoa deficit of 43,000 tons Until now, growing global demand was attributed to strong cocoa powder demand from emerging markets including Brazil and China, but Parkman said the weak grind data throws this into question.

When cocoa beans are ground, they produce roughly equal parts of butter, which makes chocolate melt in the mouth, and powder, used to flavor products including cakes and biscuits.

?Everyone is aware that powder demand has been holding grindings up and yes margins were negative, and that?s what caused this slowdown in grindings, but the European grind also suggests the powder demand story has been exaggerated. Powder demand certainly doesn?t seem to be growing,? said Parkman.

Eye Movements Do Not Reveal Lying

Multiple tests of eye movement direction and honesty found no correlation between lying and eye direction. Steve Mirsky reports

The eyes are the windows to the soul. As such they can reveal if someone is lying, right? Cop shows, advice shows, even some organizational training courses hold that if somebody looks up and to the right, they?re probably lying. Up and to the left means they?re telling the truth.

Now a study says that there is no connection between eye movement and lying. The work is in the journal Public Library of Science ONE. [Richard Wiseman et al., "The Eyes Don't Have It: Lie Detection and Neuro-Linguistic Programming"]

Researchers tested eye movement and honesty in multiple ways. For example, they tracked the eye movements of subjects who were lying or telling the truth about things they had recently done. There was no correlation between lying and eye direction.

The researchers also closely analyzed 52 archived news videos of real people making a public plea for the safe return of a missing relative. In half the videos the plea was sincere?but in half there was strong evidence that the speaker was involved in the crime. Again, no eye movement clue was evident. So when judging the honesty of a speaker, remember: the eyes do not have it.

New Rochelle, NY, July 12, 2012 Although acetazolamide is widely prescribed to prevent and treat acute mountain sickness (AMS), the appropriate dose at which it is effective and safe has not been clearly defined. A comprehensive review and meta-analysis of 24 studies comparing the efficacy and risks associated with increasing doses of acetazolamide is published in High Altitude Medicine & Biology, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers (http://www.liebertpub.com). The article is available free online at the High Altitude Medicine & Biology (http://www.liebertpub.com/ham) website.

Bengt Kayser and colleagues, University of Geneva, Switzerland, reviewed the data compiled on more than 1,000 subjects and describe the relationship between efficacy in preventing and treating AMS, risk of side effects, and increasing drug dosages. They discuss their findings in the article "Reappraisal of Acetazolamide for the Prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/ham.2011.1084)."

Unless the baseline risk of AMS is high, as with rapid transport to high altitude (as opposed to a slow ascent), acetazolamide has limited effectiveness. Some side effects occur with even the lowest doses of the drug, whereas others appear to be dose-dependent. The authors suggest that treatment be tailored for the individual depending on AMS risk and acceptability of the most common side effects such as increased urination, numbness and tingling, and taste disturbance.

"This is a valuable contribution on the pros and cons of using the most important medication for preventing and treating acute mountain sickness," says John B. West, MD, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of High Altitude Medicine & Biology and Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.
