AP: With eye on Turkey, Israel debates Armenia deaths

JERUSALEM?The Israeli parliament debated Tuesday whether to recognize the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks 100 years ago as genocide, a move that would enrage Turkey and further strain already tense ties between the two countries.

For years, Israel has refrained from taking up the issue for fear of angering Turkey, which until recently was its closest ally in the Muslim world. But as ties have frayed under the Islamic-oriented rule of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that has changed. ? ??

Merv Griffin's estate for sale for $9.5M

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) ? The California desert home of the late media mogul Merv Griffin has been put up for sale for $9.5 million.

The Desert Sun (http://mydesert.co/KrCrdP) reported Friday the 39-acre property in La Quinta features a 5,000-square-foot home, an equestrian compound with a racetrack and a lagoon.

The Moroccan-style estate was put up for the sale this week and is the latest celebrity home in the Palm Springs area to hit the market.

Gerald and Betty Ford's home in Rancho Mirage sold for nearly $1.7 million in March.

Griffin hosted his own talk show and helped create and produce "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune." He died from prostate cancer in 2007.

Gay man killed in South Africa: Rights group

JOHANNESBURG - A young gay man was killed and his body mutilated in South Africa, according to a gay rights group that today called the killing a hate crime.

Mr Thapelo Makutle was found with his throat cut Saturday morning in a room he rented in Kuruman, a town in northwestern South Africa, police said in a statement. The motive of his death is unknown and the case is being investigated as a murder, police said.

However, Ms Jabu Pereira, the spokeswoman of the local gay rights group LEGBO, said today that the perpetrators did not steal anything from Mr Makutle and his body was mutilated in a way that indicates it was a hate crime, an extra charge that leads to greater punishment. Mr Makutle's body was found under a blanket with his throat cut and tongue removed, Ms Pereira said. His genitals were also cut off and put in his mouth, witnesses told Ms Pereira.

"The community is in a state of trauma, they are shocked," Ms Pereira said. "The community gathered last night and we just stood with the family."

Mr Makutle was a leader in the local gay community, Ms Pereira said. Among other things, she said, he organised the Miss Gay Kuruman pageant.

Mr Javu Baloyi, spokesman of the Commission for Gender Equality, condemned the killing.

"It was such a barbaric act," said Mr Baloyi, whose government agency promotes the rights of gays, lesbians and other South Africans.

South Africa's constitution bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, but gays here still face discrimination and violence.

The police report said he was 23, while a spokeswoman for the local gay rights group said Mr Makutle was 24.

A memorial service is planned for tomorrow afternoon in Kuruman. The local gay rights group is organising a protest before the service. AP

Vizio details its first laptops: two thin-and-lights and a mainstream 15-incher, available now for $898 and up

Back at CES, Vizio taught us a valuable lesson: you don't need to be a seasoned PC maker to build a beautiful laptop. The outfit, best known for its value-priced TVs, didn't dip its toes into the personal computer market so much as plunge in, head first: it teased three notebooks (along with two all-in-ones), each bearing a clean, surprisingly tasteful design. Now, right on schedule, they're finally going on sale. The company just announced that its first laptops, the 14-inch Thin + Light, the 15-inch Thin + Light and the 15-inch Notebook, are available now, each starting at $898.

Funnily enough, as much as we've written about these laptops, we didn't know their names (much less specs) until now. So listen up: it's time for a quick (and long-overdue) run-down. First up, there are two "Thin + Lights" (Vizio isn't using the word Ultrabook). These come in two sizes: a 14-inch version with a 1600 x 900 display and a 15-incher with a 1080p panel. Aside from the resolution, the two models offer similar specs: Ivy Bridge processors, Intel HD 4000 graphics, SRS Premium Sound HD audio and battery life rated at seven hours. There's also a mainstream laptop, appropriately dubbed the 15.6-inch Notebook, which offers similar innards, except it has an unspecified Kepler GPU from NVIDIA. It, too, is rated for seven hours of runtime.

Across its PC lineup, Vizio will be including a so-called V key on its keyboard, which will serve as a shortcut to services like Hulu Plus, Amazon, Vudu and Netflix. (If you were wondering how Vizio would incorporate its TV know-how, this is it.) The peculiar thing is, none of these services will come installed by default as bloatware. The point is, the key is there to use as a shortcut if you chose to enable these services, and Vizio says these multimedia partners plan on offering deals specific to Vizio PC owners.
