Boom Headshot! Sony Sold 1.2M Vitas Worldwide Since Its Launch Two Months

scaledwm-img_5695 (1)Apparently there are still dedicated gamers out there. Sony stated on Tuesday that the Vita is exceeding its expectations and over 1.2 million units have sold worldwide. The Vita hit the U.S. and European market last week after launching in Japan in the middle of December 2011. Sony announced in early January at CES that only 500k Vitas sold in its home market. Many pundits and outlet stated the Vita was dead on arrival, citing casual gaming on smartphones and tablets as the killer. But don't count the Vita out yet. It's alive and kicking.

An Adjustable Jig for Aspiring Bike Builders

One of the best ways to build your own custom bikes is on a frame jig, a piece of equipment that lets you lay out the parts of the frame to your specifications and holds them in place while you assemble the pieces. But at a price of $1000 or more, most frame jigs are intended for large-scale bike producers, not the DIY enthusiasts who want to build bikes for themselves on the weekend.

That's why we like this Kickstarter project by Dillon Hodapp and David Heisserer, also known as Mixed Media Engineering. When we last heard from these guys, they were creating this DIY project that allows Popular Mechanics readers to create a dot-matrix printer capable of producing custom works of pointillist art. Their newest creation, a customizable jig called Jiggernaut, reached its funding goal in less than three days on Kickstarter, and Heisserer tells PM that some maker spaces have shown interest in having the jig on hand for their members.

The pieces of Jiggernaut are made of MDF (medium-density fiberboard) and cut with a CNC router. One assembled, the jig can help its users build a road or a mountain bike and customize it to their size. Check out the kits available, including ones that come with all the parts you'd need to start building your own bike, on their Kickstarter page.

Obligation traveling crowds out leisure trips, study finds

February 27, 2012 | Online Travel

According to a recent survey commissioned by Hotwire.com, 41 percent of traveling U.S. adults spend the majority of their vacation budget on obligation travel. And 89 percent of respondents said they would take more leisure trips if they had the time and the money to do so.

Weddings, reunions, graduations, new babies, business trips ? are you taking fewer leisure vacations because of the time and money you devote to obligation travel?

According to the survey, 94 percent of respondents said that they would take one more trip than they already had planned if they could afford it.

The solution, suggests Hotwire, is combining the obligation travel with leisure time. Work sending you to a conference in Orlando? Bring the spouse and kids so they can enjoy some time at the local theme parks.

What's Causing Brain Cancer In Baseball Players | Sports Fix Chicago

Editor?s note: This post was inspired by a comment on the Boers & Bernstein show regarding the number of brain cancer deaths among baseball players.? Our resident scientician decided to investigate that claim.?

by Ty Alleman

Hold on to your butts folks.? It?s about to get all sciency up in here?

Epidemiology is the study of health and diseases over a defined population.? It is used to help institutions (i.e. the government, universities, pharmaceutical companies, etc.) determine the health of a population that shares common characteristics such as geography, race, gender, occupation, etc.? Epidemiologists aren?t usually called in to evaluate populations such as sports teams or leagues, but there seems to be an event occurring in the world of sports that may warrant such a study.

So why the hell am I even talking about this?? Well, let?s take a look at Major League Baseball.? Some version of professional baseball has been around since the 1870?s.? It is the oldest sport in United States history.? And even though it?s gone through its share of rule changes it is still known as America?s pastime.

Throughout baseball?s history, eleven players who have reached the big league have been diagnosed with brain cancer, including the recently deceased Gary Carter.? Of those eleven, ten of them just happened to have played at least some of their career between 1960 ? 1980.

Players Career Type of Brain Tumor
Bobby Bonds 1968 ? 1981 Unspecified
Ken Brett 1967 ? 1981 Unspecified
Dick Howser 1961-1968 Unspecified
Tug McGraw 1965 ? 1984 Glioblastoma multiforme
Bobby Murcer 1965 ? 1983 Unspecified
Johnny Oats 1970 ? 1981 Glioblastoma multiforme
Dan Quisenberry 1979 ? 1990 Unspecified
John Vukovich 1970 ? 1981 Unspecified
Dick Wantz 1965-1965 Unspecified
Gary Carter 1974 ? 1992 Glioblastoma multiforme

Considering baseball is about 140 years old, it seems odd that 91% of the players who were diagnosed with the disease just happen to play in the same twenty year period.? I understand that to the average person the total number of players actually diagnosed with the disease might not seem that impressive, given that 1.6 million of people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2012 alone. ?But when you dig a little deeper into the brain cancer stats, some startling trends start to show for major leaguers who played during 60?s and 70?s.

There are eight different forms of brain cancer, but as a whole it?s pretty rare to get. Only 6.5 out of every 100,000 people are diagnosed with it.? Now compare the overall population diagnosis rate to the rate of diagnosis of baseball players.? As of 2010, about 17,300 players had played professionally in major league baseball.? Starting from 1870, if you break down the amount of players that played per decade that number comes out to about 1235* players per decade.? So the sample size of players being tested (1960-1980) is approximately 2470.? Ten people diagnosed with brain cancer per 2470 total players is obviously a higher rate, but if you actually do the math and adjust the rate of 10/2470 to a sample size of 100,000 people, the number of people who are diagnosed with brain cancer sky-rockets to 404.9.

*Oversimplified math alert:? I could not find the number of players per decade, so I took the average.? This number does not take into account differences due to expansion and roster sizes.?

So what is the cause of this increase?? It?s hard to say.? The brain cancer diagnoses could be a coincidence.? But I find it hard to say that outright because the increased rate among baseball players from the 60?s and 70?s is so significantly higher than the general population average.? I think one area to look at would be environmental changes for the players.? In the 1966, MLB introduced the first field with artificial turf (the Astrodome).? Then in the 1970?s many other ballparks switched from grass to the synthetic stuff, including Comiskey Park, Busch Stadium II, Riverfront Stadium, Three Rivers Stadium, Veterans Stadium, Candlestick Park, Kauffman Stadium, The Kingdome, Exhibition Stadium, Olympic Stadium, the Metrodome, Rogers Centre, and Tropicana Field.? Today, most of these stadiums have either had their surfaces replaced, or are no longer used at all, by their respective teams.

In 2008, USA Today reported that areas with synthetic surfaces (specifically Astroturf) were contaminated with lead.? Studies have been done that show that exposure to lead negatively affects the brain and that regular exposure can lead to increased risk of brain cancer.

I cannot 100 percent conclude anything here because: A) That?s not how science works and B) I do not have the capabilities to test the old astrodome surface at this time.? What I can say, though, is that this is an issue that needs to be examined further by someone who isn?t a college senior writing for a sports blog.? It is the responsibility of Major League Baseball (along with any other pro-sports league who used artificial surfaces during that time) to investigate and determine why such a high rate of former baseball players who played in the 60?s and 70?s developed brain cancer.

We'd love it if you shared this post on Facebook, Twitter, or whatever the hell you prefer to use. Come on...do it. Your friends will thank you. Please?

It was the early in the afternoon as they drove to the hospital. There were chilly winds blowing through the town, but the day still had warmth to it. The sun was high in the sky and there were only a few clouds. People milled through the town, going on with their busy day. Sasha stretched out in the back seat of her parent's red car. She was getting impatient as there was a bit of traffic to get to the hospital. She leaned her forehead against the window. Sasha took in her surroundings as she looked out the window.

"Are we almost there? What's the girl's name again?" Sasha asked, she shifted in her seat. Her mother, Sophia, turned around in the passenger seat and looked at her daughter.
"Just a little while more honey, be a little more patient. Oh, and the girl's name is Reader, try to remember her name, you can be forgetful at times," Sophia said, sighing to herself. Sasha closed her eyes.
"You told me her name once..." Sasha murmured under her breathe.
"What?" she heard her mother ask.
"Nothing, just talking to myself," she replied. Her mother shrugged and turned back around. 'Reader, that's an interesting name,' Sasha thought to herself. She closed her eyes and hummed softly to herself. She needed to detract herself. After about fifth-teen minutes or so they finally drove up to the hospital. Sasha quickly took her seatbelt off.

"I'll go get her," she told her parents. Sasha opened the car door and hopped out when the car stopped. She closed the door. Sasha ran her fingers through her hair. Then she entered the hospital. She looked around. "Reader! We are here to pick you up!" she called out. Though, she blushed when a nurse shushed her. She glanced around at the people who were waiting to get picked up. She wondered which one was Reader. Sasha only glanced back when her parents walked up behind her. Sasha wrapped her arms around her waist. Sasha was wearing dark blue jeans, a long sleeve red shirt with a v-neck, and red sandals.

Multiply Your Business Success By Studying Self Improvement

???

You have tried everything you can think of to make your business work. There is certainly nothing wrong at all with just setting it aside and returning to it at some point in the future. When was the last time you looked very objectively at the way you think about things? Your daily thinking is something that you need to have more awareness of because it will help you. If you do this, then you very well may discover negative patterns in your thoughts. We are suggesting that these habits of thinking are making an adverse impact on your present level of success. You can greatly benefit from a solid and reliable self improvement strategy.

You have to think outside of the box and be willing to try new things. If this has always been a problem for you, you just might be stuck in the rut of not being able to leave your comfort area. In other words, you have a hard time stepping out of your comfort zone. There are few people in this world who do not face this same situation in their lives. You are not the only person to tackle this issue. Expect to have to tackle varied areas that will cause you discomfort, but learn to overcome your resistance. One important aspect of a successful business person you must adopt is recognizing the areas you are comfortable operating in and identifying the things that cause you stress and anxiety. You can overcome your problems with anxiety by taking small steps. Don't let yourself become overwhelmed. Don't pick the most intimidating thing to tackle at the beginning. Begin with something that is just a little bit challenging. Don't give up until you've conquered this first step. Then, you can go on to the next level.

Looking at any situation through rose-colored glasses is natural human behavior. The real world isn't always to our liking. Sometimes, we can become discouraged and even want to just give up. But there are jewels waiting for us even in such times, as well. One main attribute a business owner must foster for success is his or her objectivity. Our method for realistically interpreting what is going on with our businesses is based upon our being willing to recognize and accept the truth. The best way to do this is to listen to your self-talk and be aware of what you are thinking. It's hard to stop wishful thinking, but most people do it from time to time, and are aware of this "daydreaming." Being objective about your business is the secret. Subjective thinking will not move you forward.

It is interesting that many negative attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can impede business success also have the same effect in other areas of our lives. People who constantly find fault with themselves do so in all areas of life. This behavior is often seen regardless of what is done for a living. Do not be surprised that the need to execute everything without mistake is often seen here, too. It does seem to us that this particular way of being is something that is not born in us. If you want to make the attempt to modify this behavior, then begin with realizing you are like that. This is all about a process that will take time to become effective. This cannot be changed overnight, and so just decide to work on it until you realize progress has been made. Any kind of self improvement program is not the easiest thing to do. However when it comes to your business, you should take a deep breath and take the plunge. We know you have the ability to conquer anything with your self, and you have to believe that, too.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The director of "A Separation" dished that the biggest diva on the set of his Oscar-nominated film was none other than his daughter.

Asghar Farhadi joked during a panel discussion with directors vying for the foreign-language film Oscar at Sunday's 84th annual Academy Awards that his daughter, Sarina Farhadi, who plays an estranged Iranian couple's 11-year-old child, was the most difficult person to work with on the film, which is also up for the original screenplay Oscar.

"When I was working with other actors or actresses, out of the respect that they had for me, they would still agree with what I asked them to do, even if they weren't convinced, but this was not the case with my daughter," said Farhadi through a translator on stage at the motion-picture academy's headquarters Saturday morning.

Farhadi revealed that he doesn't completely explain the plots of his movies to child actors because "the less the kids know, they do better." That wasn't the case with "A Separation," which is considered the front-runner for the foreign-language Oscar. Farhadi said his daughter was intimately involved with the story even before he finished the script.

Sarina might be Farhadi's lucky charm. "A Separation" has already racked up several honors this awards season, winning a Golden Globe, Cesar Award, Guldbagge Award and Independent Spirit Award, as well dominating at film festivals and appearing on the top ten lists of many critics.

Farhadi's "A Separation" from Iran will face Michael R. Roskam's crime drama "Bullhead" from Belgium, Philippe Falardeau's immigrant substitute teacher tale "Monsieur Lazhar" from Canada, Joseph Cedar's Talmudic scholar saga "Footnote" from Israel and Agnieszka Holland's World War II drama "In Darkness" from Poland for the foreign-language Oscar at Sunday's ceremony.

Holland had very different demands for the children in her film, which is based on the true story of Polish petty criminal Leopold Socha who hid Jews from Nazis during World War II. She needed Milla Bankowicz and Oliwer Stanczak, a pair of child actors portraying young Jews living in the sewage canals of Lviv, to be comfortable in a dark, gritty setting filled with rats.

"My biggest fear was that they would be afraid of them," said Holland. "They'd been dreaming about meeting the rats, and they played with them like pets, exactly as the real children, Krystyna and Pavel, did."

How To Get The Biggest Personal Injury Settlement

People are involved in accidents every day. Perhaps that is why personal injury cases are such a common legal issues throughout the United States.

If you or someone you love was severely injured in an accident that was caused by another party?s negligence, then it is imperative that you hire a personal injury attorney. An experienced personal injury attorney can help you understand your legal options regarding personal injury claims. This will help allow you to pursue a personal injury lawsuit against the parties at fault in the most effective manner, and hopefully lead to you receiving the biggest personal injury settlement possible.

A lot of people assume that their family lawyer can handle their case, so they will go to them for help. However, the reality is that family lawyers often don?t have expertise, in-depth experience and specialized knowledge in personal injury law and may not be best able to handle the case.

You need an expert such as a personal injury lawyer to utilize their experience navigating through this part of the legal system to handle your case. Experienced attorneys will also be more likely to successfully pursue a case in order to ensure that a guilty party is punished and that you receive the largest compensation possible.

A personal injury attorney will protect you from insurance companies who are looking out for their own best interests. In many instances both your insurance company and the defendant?s insurance company will try to convince you that your case isn?t valid and that you should not receive compensation.

If an insurance company does offer compensation, there is also a significant chance they will not initially offer you the full amount they are prepared to pay.

Experienced personal injury lawyers know how to deal with insurance companies because it is part of what they deal with on a daily basis. These attorneys are fully cognizant of insurance law, know how it applies to your situation, and are aware of how to deal with insurance company?s tactics.

Personal injury attorneys also know how much you should expect to be compensated and will do whatever they can to make sure that you will be receiving the compensation that you are entitled to in such circumstances.

It is also in your best interest to hire an attorney from your area because he or she will be more familiar with your local laws. Local attorneys also will be better acquainted with the judges in your area, which may have a positive influence on your case.

So, in order to receive the biggest personal injury settlement, hire an experienced personal injury attorney in your area. To find successful attorneys in your area go to http://www.sokolovelaw.com/

Easy methods to Maximize A person's Profits With Rental Real estate

As through all small businesses, you singapore property tell families what you are carrying out. I have witnessed landlords plus their insurance agencies have to spend big capital to undeserving tenants because of the landlord never follow the appropriate procedure for shedding the tenants? personalized property. 10 Tips for Pest Control in Winter

Like humans and animals, pests also prefer the warm indoors compared to the cold outdoors. Many people fail to understand that their warm homes can in fact become the perfect breeding grounds for vermin and once they get inside, they will multiply to create a dangerous habitat in your home. So here are 10 tips that can help control pests during winter.

1. Use Plastic Containers: Always pack edible items and other household items in plastic containers or covers. Do not use cardboard or paper bags because these provide a comforting place for insects to hide in. They are also easily penetrable.

2. Dispose Off Garbage: Keep garbage sealed in air tight bags and have them disposed off regularly. Dump the garbage bag in the bin outside your home instead of keeping it in the kitchen.

3.

Mesh Screens: Cover all openings, including windows, doors, chimney vents etc with fine mesh screens. The will prevent pest infestation while also insuring your home gets the ventilation that it needs.

4. Fix Wall Cracks: Check your home meticulously for any wall cracks or holes that are potential living areas for bugs. Most importantly check the areas surrounding water pipes and other fittings as with time the moisture around the pipes cause cracks and attracts all kinds of crawlers. Seal the cracks and mend any openings.

5. Clean Cabinets: Every once a month, clean wooden furniture and cabinets as these are the places that crawlers love to live in. You must pay special attention to kitchen cabinets and bathroom furniture and any corner of the home that is dark and warm.

Spray the cupboards with pesticide and make sure there's no spider web or eggs lying around.

6. De-Clutter Your Home: A cluttered home is a bug's paradise. These creatures simply love cramped furniture and household items which is why the attic is also one of their favorite places. Throw away unneeded boxes, old clothes, furniture and newspapers or books. Keep your home neat, clean and clutter free. If there's no place for them to hide, they wouldn't be interested in invading your home!

7. Pet Cleanliness: Keep your pet as well as your pet's abode clean and hygienic. Do not let them litter around and always wash pet food dishes daily. Store all pet food in air tight containers and wash their bed or blanket frequently.

8. Clean Up the Yard: Litter, trash and soil or garden debris are attractive for insects. Do not let mulch or weeds get near your home's foundation and mow the lawn frequently. Keep your garden or backyard clean.

9. Use Pest Repellant: Keep a repellant handy and spray it weekly to prevent pests from entering or residing in your home.

10. Call an Expert: If despite manual efforts you cannot curb this problem at home, then you should seek professional pest control services. Call in experts to make your home pest free and a healthy abode.

You don't have to wait for winter to take up these preventive measures. Perform these throughout the year and hopefully your home would be clear from all kind of insects and bugs.

For fish, fear smells like sugar

When one fish gets injured, the rest of the school takes off in fear, tipped off by a mysterious substance known as "Schreckstoff" (meaning "scary stuff" in German). Now, researchers reporting online on February 23 in the Cell Press journal Current Biology have figured out what that scary stuff is really made of.

Within that chemical brew is a special type of sugar found in abundance in fish skin. When a fish is wounded, fragments of the sugar known as chondroitin sulfate alarm other fish nearby.

"Our results provide a solution to a 70-year-old puzzle: the nature of this alarm signal," says Suresh Jesuthasan of A*Star's Neuroscience Research Partnership and the Duke/National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School in Singapore.

Chondroitin sulfate is a major component of fish skin, he said, and its breakdownlikely triggered by enzymes released upon injuryseems to be the key.

The new study shows that Schreckstoff and these sugar fragments register in a particular part of the zebrafish brain. That region in the scent-processing olfactory bulb includes an enigmatic class of sensory neurons known as crypt cells.

The researchers suggest that those neurons may be specialized to detect the sugary alarm cue. "This region of the olfactory bulb has unique projections to higher centers of the brain," Jesuthasan says, "so there may be a special circuit mediating aspects of the innate fear response."

The findings identify a new class of odorants for fish. It also helps to explain how this "danger" signal might have evolved even though the signal offers no particular benefit to its sender. Those sugar fragments are naturally released upon injury, whether anyone can smell them or not. Fish able to pick up the scent and flee are more likely to survive and reproduce.

Puzzles remain, however. For instance, some fish species will sense alarm cues released from closely related species but respond less intensely to cues from more distant relatives. The trend suggests that chondroitin fragments may come in a variety of "flavors," and the researchers are now interested in testing whether the same fragments that breed fear in zebrafish will elicit responses in other species as well.

Ultimately, the discovery could lead to new insight into the nature of fear itself.

"These findings underscore the usefulness of the zebrafish as a system to investigate the neural basis of innate fear," Jesuthasan said. "Given the transparency of larval fish, it is possible to see at single-cell resolution what happens throughout the brain when the organism detects danger. This will allow us in the future to ask how neurons, as a group, regulate behavior and emotional responses."

'John Carter' Director Initially 'Bristled' At Title Change

'If you like a movie, heck, you can call it 'Dirt,' ' Andrew Stanton says of dropping 'of Mars' from the title.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

After decades in development limbo, the hero of Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel, "John Carter of Mars," will finally find his way onto the big screen with the guidance of director Andrew Stanton. But when he gets there, he'll have dropped the "of Mars."

After a rather controversial title change, the classic title "John Carter of Mars" became the shortened and genre-neutral "John Carter."

For fans of the original Burroughs novels, this came as a move away from the beloved source materials, and Stanton admitted to MTV News' Josh Horowitz that the change concerned him initially as well. "At first, I bristled, to be really honest. You can't control people's first impressions as much as you'd like," he said. "There are just a lot of people that assume that it's this weird astronaut/ space thing when you have 'Mars' in the title."

The change took time to accept, but with it, Stanton found a new angle of the story to explore. "Even then, I wasn't going to be swayed, but then I realized, 'Wow, the movie's really about a guy that becomes John Carter of Mars,'" Stanton said. "I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but then I sort of thought, 'All right, so now that actually makes sense. Maybe I can pull something that I haven't seen people do in a movie before.' "

But what's in a name? Stanton said that if he made a movie people can love, then not much. "My feeling is, if you like a movie, heck, you can call it 'Dirt,' and they'll call it whatever for the rest of the time it exists," Stanton said.

The title change was among Disney's several marketing choices that took heat from fans. But Stanton said he understands the challenge of marketing one of his unorthodox films, like his last movie, "WALL-E."

"Disney's been changing hands, so it's been a little bit of all hands on deck, but I feel we're finally in good hands and we're settling in," Stanton said. "It's not like anything else exactly. I'm used to giving Disney movies that they're not used to selling, so I knew it would be a bumpy road, to be fair to them."

What do you think of Disney's decision to drop "of Mars" from the title? Leave your comment below!

Ben Flajnik on Kacie Boguskie Ouster: Tough Call!

Ben Flajnik sent fan favorite Kacie Boguskie packing on Monday's hometown dates episode of The Bachelor, the third-to-last installment of the ABC show's season.

In a surprise, Courtney Robertson, Nicki Sterling and Lindzi Cox all moved on (see The Bachelor spoilers for scoop on the next two weeks) while Kacie was left in tears.

In his weekly blog on People, Ben reflects on his travels to Clarksville, Tenn., Kacie's hometown, and the turning point when the romance began to go downhill fast.

"The day portion of our date went swimmingly as usual, but as Kacie started to talk about her dad, I got nervous," Ben writes. "I started to think he wouldn't approve of me being so different than a man he would normally want his daughter to date."

"The evening was difficult for me. Kacie's family was really nice and welcoming, but every time I had a conversation with one of her family members, I felt like I was disappointing them. Kacie was raised with more traditional values than I was."

"I felt like that would get between us in regards to her family. I thought about it so much that it started getting in the way of my feelings growing stronger for her."

"It was disheartening. Parents' approval and permission is really important to me and I didn't feel like I got that from her family, though they were kind and warm."

"This was the most difficult rose ceremony to date. It is so cliché to say, but they get harder as time goes on. My decision to send Kacie home wasn't an easy one."

"I still had feelings for her, but I did make a promise to her father that if I didn't see it going much further, I would end it sooner than later to not hurt her as much."

"The last thing I wanted to do was hurt Kacie, but ultimately it was the right decision, as hard as it was. Man, this has been a roller coaster."

How will it end? Put another way, will he get off the wild ride before he makes the mistake he seems determined to make? All we can do is stay tuned.

When Occupy Wall Street and similar protests played out over the past year, the phenomenon looked familiar to Emory University primatologist Frans de Waal: He's seen similar moral outrage over economic inequity expressed by monkeys and chimps. And he thinks we could learn a lesson or two from our fellow primates.

"The role of inequity in society is grossly underestimated," he told reporters today, on the final day of this year's meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Vancouver, Canada. "Inequity is not good for your health, basically."

Based on primate studies, that goes for the haves as well as the have-nots. Far from being a uniquely human quality, a sense of fairness is something biologists have seen in studies of primates as well as crows and dogs. Even elephants may have an appreciation of inequity, although de Waal said he and his colleagues haven't done such a study with that species because "you don't want to piss off an elephant."

One of the classic studies involves capuchin monkeys who were given treats when they exchanged tokens with their human handlers. Two types of treats were offered: cucumber slices (meh...) and grapes (yum!). If one monkey saw that another monkey was consistently getting grapes while she was getting only cucumber slices, she'd quickly start protesting ? by flinging the cucumber back at the handler and angrily jumping onto the cage walls.

"This is basically the Wall Street protest right here," de Waal said.

De Waal's replay of the scene never fails to get a human laugh, whether it's at the AAAS meeting or at a TEDx conference in Atlanta, as shown in the must-see video above. But there are serious points behind the laughter: Inequality causes tension and stress, not only for the one who gets the cucumber, but also for the one gets the grape (or a million-dollar bonus) and has to endure the resulting outrage.

Researchers set up a barter game with capuchin monkeys to see how they responded to unequal payoffs. For the full story behind this experiment, check out the NSF Science Nation video.

Some primates actually get the message. "In some combinations, the one who gets the grape refuses it unless the other one gets the grape," de Waal said. Other primates make a different choice. De Waal pointed to a chimpanzee study of selfish vs. altrustic behavior, in which the chimps are more likely to be in a sharing mood if they've attracted the attention of another chimp. However, they're not quite as likely to share if the other chimp is actively pressing them to do so.

The bottom line from de Waal's talk is that a sense of fairness, outrage over moral equality and the ability to reconcile and cooperate are not uniquely human behaviors. Rather, such sensibilities were hard-wired into brains long before the rise of the human species. This is reflected in neuroscience as well, de Waal said. "Very ancient parts of the brain are involved in moral decision making," he observed.

All this meshes with the message of de Waal's latest book, "The Age of Empathy." For more from de Waal about the altruism of animals, check out my Q&A from 2009.

Here are a few more nuggets from de Waal's lecture and news briefing in Vancouver:

  • Different primate species express signs of reconciliation in different ways. For example, stumptail monkeys make up by inspecting each other's rear ends, without ever looking each other in the eye. In contrast, chimps and other apes (including us hairless apes) "need eye contact" when they reconcile their differences, de Waal said.
  • Men make a characteristic pursed-lip gesture when expressing regret ? a gesture that's also widely seen in other male primates under similar circumstances. But de Waal says it's rarer to see women making that pursed-lip look.
  • Empathy?? the ability to share an emotional connection with other individuals ? isn't unique to humans. But humans, like many other species, make a distinction between in-group and out-group connections. Having a sense of empathy for people beyond our "in-group," however that's defined, may be a "fragile experiment" being conducted by our species, de Waal said.
  • During an earlier session at the AAAS meeting, a group of scientists and philosophers called for the promulgation of a "Declaration of Rights for Cetaceans." De Waal was asked what he thought of setting up a declaration of rights for non-human primates, and he replied that he generally took a "welfarist" view toward other species. Humans were bound by an obligation to animals rather than by a set of rights drawn up on their behalf, he said. He pointed to the recently adopted limits on chimpanzee research as an example. "If they [chimps] are not so necessary for biomedical studies, should we be using them in biomedical studies?" de Waal asked.
