Last month, I got treated to a surprise visit to Las Vegas by my husband!! It was one of these last minute surprises!! I got a text Thursday afternoon at work asking me to be packed to travel on Friday to a surprise destination!! ?I got the shock of my life when I got home and saw that our tickets were for Las Vegas!!! ?I had never been to Las Vegas but I looked up ?this website- Las Vegas Hotel Tips??which had great tips on how to plan a great trip to Las Vegas. ?We had a great hotel right on the Boulevard. ?The weather was great and as both of us like playing poker and roulette, we really enjoyed our short break in Las Vegas.

In fact we enjoyed playing poker so much ?over there that we decided to organise our own poker night with friends. One of the dishes I made on the day is what my brother BT calls Bapu's bhajias and my friend VP calls packed bhajias. ? I have named them Spicy bombs as that's what Hansa called them in her recipe book. ? In her recipe, she adds whole chillies and gathia to the boiled potatoes but I decided against that. ?I decided to remove the seeds from ?chillies and blend them with sev noodles as I thought that this would blend better and make the bhajias tastier. ?I was in one of those dare devil moods after my trip to the USA and wanted to see which of my friends had the guts to eat these spicy delicacies. ? I was expecting to see a few red sweaty ?faces but surprisingly, all my friends enjoyed them and found them to taste OK after a few drinks.

Ingredients for enough bhajias for 3-4 people?

12-16 new baby potatoes

For the batter to dip the potatoes:

2 cups of chick pea flour (often called gram flour or besan)
1 teaspoon salt
? teaspoon of Ajwain
small bunch of? fresh coriander cut finely (can use coriander powder too)
Pinch of soda bi carbonate

For stuffing No 1:

1 cup sev?( you can buy ready made sev noodles in most Asian stores)
4-5 fresh green chillies (washed and blended)
1 tsp ground sugar
small bunch of finely chopped coriander
2-3 tbsps lemon juice
1 tbsp oil

For stuffing no 2

5-6 cloves of ?blended garlic
1 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon chillypowder
? teaspoon of cumin powder
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 tbsp sesame seeds
1tbsp dessicated coconut
small bunch of finely chopped coriander

For the Deep Frying:

1 litre of cooking oil ( I always use sunflower oil)

Method for both the stuffings:

Prepare the potatoes as below:?

1. Steam the baby potatoes with the skin on. I suggest steaming rather than boiling as you do not want the potatoes to over cook and break.

2. Once cooked, allow to cool and peel the skin from the potatoes.

?Prepare the stuffing No 1 (ingredients for 10-12 baby potatoes):

1. ?Crush the sev using your hands and mix all the ingredients listed under stuffing No 1 above in a bowl and leave for 20 minutes.

Prepare stuffing No 2 which will be hotter and spicer?(Ingredients for 4 baby potatoes)

1. Peel and blend the garlic using a pestle and mortar or a grinder.

2. Add salt and 1 teaspoon of lemon to the garlic to make the blending easier.

3. Remove the blended mixture to a mixing bowl and add the chilly powder and cumin powder to it

4.??Add the finely chopped coriander , dessicated coconut and ?sesame seeds to the mixture.

5. ?This mixture should resemble a firm paste.

Prepare the chick pea flour batter to dip your potatoes in:

1. Add one cup of water to the Chick pea flour and mix well. ?You may need to add half ?cup more to get the right thickness of the batter.

2. Add the salt, ajwain, fresh coriander and stir well.

3. The mixture should be fairly thick as shown in my picture.

4.? Allow this to rest whilst you heat the oil.

Now prepare the potatoes for both the stuffings:

1. Cut the potatoes across - but only half way? on one side; turn to the opposite side and cut the potato across half way again.

2. ?The stuffing with the sev should now be soft and?manageable?to use. If it feels too dry, sprinkle a couple of drops of water to moisten it.

3. ?Fill the potatoes with the stuffing mixture no 1:

1. To check if the oil is hot, drop a small drop of batter into the oil. If the oil is ready, the batter will rise to the top.

2. Turn the heat slightly low now.

3. Add a pinch of soda by carbonate to the chick pea mixture and stir.

3. Take one potato at a time; using a spoon, dip it in the chick pea flour mixture and transfer it to the oil -using a knife or a chopstick .

4. Allow it to cook one side and turn.

5. Once they look golden yellow, they are cooked and ready to serve with any chilly sauce.?

Lightning Still Largely a Mystery

Some 44,000 thunderstorms rage worldwide each day, delivering as many as 100 lightning bolts to the ground every second. These dramatic, deafening flashes of electricity recharge the global battery by keeping the ground flush with negative electric charge and maintaining the ionosphere's positive charge. Lightning turns the Earth into an electric circuit, and it may have even delivered the spark that got life started in the primordial soup.

But for all we know, lightning might as well come from Zeus. Counting Ben Franklin's kite-and-key experiment as the starting point, 250 years of scientific investigation have yet to get to grips with how lightning works.

Atmospheric scientists have a basic sketch of the process. Positive electric charges build up at the tops of?thunderclouds?and negative charges build up at the bottoms (except for perplexing patches of positive charges often detected in the center-bottom). Electrical attraction between these opposite charges, and between the negative charges at the bottom of the cloud and positive charges that accumulate on the ground below, eventually grow strong enough to overcome the air's resistance to electrical flow.

Like a herd of elephants wading across a river, negative charges venture down from the bottom of the cloud into the sky below and move haltingly toward the ground, forming an invisible, conductive path called a "step leader." The charges' path eventually connects to similar "streamers" of positive charges surging up from the ground, completing an electrical circuit and enabling negative charges to pour from the cloud to the ground along the circuit they have formed. This sudden, enormous electric discharge is the flash of lightning.?[Infographic: How Lightning Strikes]

But as for how all that happens ? well, it just doesn't make much physical sense. There are three big questions needing answers, said Joe Dwyer, a leading lightning physicist based at the Florida Institute of Technology. "First, how do you actually charge up a thundercloud?" Dwyer said. A mix of water and ice is needed to provide atoms that can acquire charge, and updrafts are required to move the charged particles around. The rest of the details are hazy.

One theory holds that high-energy cosmic rays from space shoot down through the cloud, stripping off electrons from atoms as they go and dragging these negatively charged particles toward the cloud base, creating a charge imbalance. Dwyer said that although this process may play a role, it doesn't seem sufficient to explain the huge imbalance that scientists observe.

The consensus among scientists, he told Life's Little Mysteries, is that charge separation is mainly achieved in a process called "non-inductive charging mechanism."

"You have a mixed phase of ice and water up above 5 kilometers [3 miles] or so, and somehow those interact with each other and you have some kind of precipitation, and you have updrafts blowing up," he said. "Somehow the ice and water interact and manage to separate into oppositely charged particles. The lighter particles acquire positive charge and get blown to the top, and the heavier ones are negative and fall down."

That aforementioned positive patch near the bottom of the cloud remains a head-scratcher. [The Biggest Unsolved Mysteries in Physics]

The second point of confusion is called the "lightning initiation problem." Measurements of the electric fields inside thunderclouds have consistently yielded peak values that are an order of magnitude weaker than is needed to break down the insulating properties of air. Man-made spark plugs require a much bigger electric field, or voltage difference between one electrode and the other in order for a current to tear across the gap. So the question is, "How do you get a spark going inside a thunderstorm? The electric fields never seem to be big enough inside the storm to generate a spark. So how does that spark get going? This is a very active area of research," Dwyer said.

And once the spark gets going, the final question is how it keeps going. "After you get it started, how does lightning propagate for tens of miles through clouds?" Dwyer said. "That's an amazing thing ? how do you turn air from being an insulator into a conductor?"

Lightning confounds much of scientists' understanding of basic physics. But according to Dwyer, progress has recently picked up the pace. "We have a lot of ways of measuring lightning and storms that weren't available a few years ago. We can look at the radio signals coming out of them. We can trigger lightning, so that we can know where to point our cameras and instruments. Ten years ago we realized that lightning produces X-rays and gamma rays, which was unexpected. This has given us new insight into what's going on. So we're making a lot of progress."

As of yet, it seems Zeus' wrath has?technically not been ruled out.

Morning Bell: 5 Ways Obama Disappointed at ... - Heritage Foundation

President Obama spoke to the United Nations General Assembly in New York yesterday ? and what a disappointing speech it was.

He actually scrapped his original speech outline to focus on the controversial YouTube video that many have suggested sparked recent anti-American attacks in the Middle East, including one in Libya that killed a U.S. Ambassador and other Americans. Making this video the focus of his speech was inappropriate. He should have used the international platform to make an unapologetic case for freedom. The President failed the American people?and America?s allies?in five major ways.

1. He failed to give a robust defense of free speech.

In tripping over the YouTube video that was offensive to Muslims, the President seemed to validate other countries? disregard for freedom of speech:

I know that not all countries in this body share this particular understanding of the protection of free speech. We recognize that. But in 2012, at a time when anyone with a cell phone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button, the notion that we can control the flow of information is obsolete. The question, then, is how we respond.

He also admonished people for offending others, saying, ?The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. Yet to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see when the image of Jesus Christ is desecrated, churches are destroyed, or the Holocaust is denied.?

The President probably thought he was being clever, turning the argument around on those calling for restrictions on free speech. But it would not be surprising if there were a number of nodding heads in the audience agreeing that all such ?incitement? should be banned. That comment could, and probably will, be interpreted as a backhand endorsement of efforts to restrict free speech like the ?defamation of religions? resolutions offered by the Organization of the Islamic Conference in the U.N. and the Human Rights Council.

Heritage expert Brett Schaefer responded that:

President Obama spent less time defending free speech than he did outlining a vague vision for a world with tolerance and diversity as its key ideals. Perhaps this lopsided emphasis sought to reinforce the administration?s dubious claim that only hateful speech is to blame for the attacks on our embassies, but the overall effect was to lend credibility to the notion that governments should be policing speech.

Instead of free speech, the Obama Administration has had a policy of apologetic speech. The Administration supported a U.N. ?anti-blasphemy? resolution last year that threatens freedom of speech by condemning any expression that could be deemed ?defamation of religion.? The President?s words yesterday continued this weak, apologetic stance.

2. He tiptoed around Iran.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will speak to the U.N. today, but he?s already made his positions quite clear. This week, Iran has escalated threats against Israel and the United States, and Ahmadinejad has said that Israel should be ?eliminated? and that a ?new order? should emerge, without the U.S. as a superpower.

In response, the President made a ?milquetoast statement,? said Heritage?s Nile Gardiner, projecting ?a dangerous leading-from-behind mentality at a time when the free world needs bold U.S. leadership.? The President continues to pay lip service to diplomacy with Iran, when the time has clearly passed for this approach.

3. He failed to give Israel strong backing.

Heritage?s Gardiner lamented that ?Yet again, Obama drew moral equivalence between the Israelis and the Palestinians, a theme he has frequently expounded upon since taking office.? Palestine continues to edge its way into U.N. organizations, pursuing statehood without negotiating with Israel. The President should have taken a hard line against this. Instead, he made U.S. support for Israel?America?s steadfast ally in the Middle East?a mere footnote in his speech.

4. He did not promote economic freedom.

Heritage experts said ahead of the speech that President Obama should call for ?a new era of economic liberalization to expand economic freedom around the globe and ensure that the opportunities of a globalized and interdependent world economy are available to all citizens.? This is the key to raising people out of poverty and giving them alternatives to joining radicalized groups. However, the Obama Administration has failed to increase economic freedom at home or to promote it vigorously abroad.

5. He failed to project American strength.

The United Nations General Assembly is an odd place where oppressive dictators are given the same platform as free nations. It is a unique opportunity to remind the world why people risk their lives to come to America, and to recommit to protecting the freedoms that make that risk worthwhile. As Heritage?s Kim Holmes has said:

We should never allow the U.N. or anyone to abuse the mantra of human rights to undermine our sovereign constitutional system which not only protects our God-given rights and the liberty to govern ourselves but also offers the best model for others to do the same.

No American should speak apologetically about America. Especially not the President.

Employee-Driven Charity Giveaway Helps Children and Families in Need

Riverside, CA? The start of the new school year will be brighter for many local children and families in need. Springboard Nonprofit Consumer Credit Management, Inc. (?Springboard?) donated 144 new backpacks filled with school supplies to students receiving assistance from family shelters in Riverside, San Bernardino, Victorville, Hesperia and Upland. This is the second consecutive year of the charitable backpack program, which is organized by Springboard?s S.E.R.V.I.C.E. committee, which held fundraisers throughout the year to raise funds to purchase backpacks for students enrolled in Pre-school through 12th grade. Springboard employees also ?adopted? students and purchased specific requested items such art supplies, pens, pencils, paper, rulers and markers for their student. Springboard?s S.E.R.V.I.C.E. committee is comprised of volunteer team members who are dedicated to making a difference in the community, above and beyond their day-to-day job responsibilities at Springboard, a full service housing and consumer credit counseling agency.

?This is one of the many ways that Springboard employees demonstrate their care and concern for the community,? said Melinda Opperman, Springboard?s senior vice president. ?We know that many families in the region are struggling. We?re always looking ways to respond and to provide assistance to those in need,? said Opperman.

Springboard contacted family shelters in the region that helped identify families needing the most assistance in providing back to school supplies for their children. When Did People Start Doing the Tomahawk Chop?

Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown tried to distance himself yesterday from staffers caught on video doing a tomahawk chop to mock opponent Elizabeth Warren?s claims of Native American ancestry. Where does the tomahawk chop come from?

Probably Florida. Florida State University adopted the Seminole as its symbol in 1947, and early depictions were of a Native American holding a tomahawk, the type of hatchet used by Colonial-era Native Americans and white colonists. It?s not clear exactly when Florida State fans began doing the tomahawk chop?a rhythmic extension and contraction of the forearm, with the palm open, to mimic the action of chopping?but a former FSU president once claimed that it was invented by the FSU marching band in the early 1980s. (Until 1972, the university used ?Seminole Sammy,? a white student clad in fake Native American garb, as its mascot.)

Atlanta Braves fans adopted the in the early 1990s.?According to most accounts, athletic renaissance man Deion Sanders, an FSU grad, introduced the move to the Braves when he first played for the Georgia team in 1991.* Braves fans sometimes hold foam tomahawks when doing the chop, and they, like FSU fans, sing a wordless ?war chant? in tandem with the chop during athletic events.

Like most professional athletic appropriations of Native American culture, the tomahawk chop and the war chant have little basis in Native American history. There is no indication that Native Americans ever made the gesture known today as the tomahawk chop. Tomahawks were historically not only used as weapons by Native Americans but also revered as sacred objects. Similarly, scalping?which FSU?s fight song encourages its athletes to do to their opponents?was practiced by both European settlers and Native Americans during the Colonial era, and it wasn?t widespread among Native Americans. The spread of the popular association of Native Americans with mock savagery probably dates to the early 20^th century, around the time the Boy Scouts began using Native American-inspired terms and images in its curriculum.

Athletic teams? use of Native American mascots has been subject to criticism repeatedly over the years for being insensitive and insulting to Native American people, and today the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation called Brown?s staffers? use of the gesture ?offensive and racist.?

Democrats generally welcomed the step, although Obama's camp won't comment on Fed actions. Republicans called it further confirmation that Obama's policies are failing.

If elected, the Republican says he won't reappoint?Bernanke?when his chairman's term expires in January 2014.
