Microsoft evangelist admits he misspoke regarding Windows Phone 8 updates
This is why companies have to be careful in their external communication: if a spokesperson reveals relevant details about an anticipated product, the news is going to be reported. Such a situation happened just two days ago, when Microsoft employee Nuno Silva went on the record -- on video, nonetheless -- to say that all current Windows Phone handsets would receive the upgrade to Apollo. Not so fast. Silva has since retracted his statement and now insists that his remarks only extend to apps. Yep. What he meant to say was that existing Windows Phone applications should work with the new operating system. Beyond that clarification, however, the company has no new information to share regarding the upgrade potential of current Windows Phone handsets. Makes you wonder if anyone in the company knows for sure.

First software update now rolling out for European HTC One X
The first official new software update is now rolling out for unbranded HTC One X retail units in Europe, bringing HTC's new flagship phone up to version 1.28.401.9. The 30MB update is being delivered over-the-air, so head to 'Settings > About > Software Updates' to grab the new version. Note that if your One X is network-branded, you'll likely have to wait a little longer for your carrier to approve this update before it's pushed out. And for what it's worth, the new software version is still based on Android 4.0.3 rather than the slightly newer 4.0.4 that's running on some Nexus devices.
So far we're only seeing a few minor changes on our One X -- the phone no longer incorrectly displays the on-screen menu key in certain Google apps, like YouTube, and automatic brightness levels seem to have been pared back somewhat, too. This version is also supposed to fix the battery life issues many One X owners have been reporting in the two weeks since the phone's launch. In addition, we're hearing that the bug which occasionally resulted in garbled text and icons in the notification bar has also been squished.
One X owners, be sure to shout out in the comments if you've noticed any other changes or fixes.

Afghan girls poisoned in anti-education attack
By Reuters
About 150 Afghan schoolgirls were poisoned on Tuesday after drinking contaminated water at a high school in the country's north, officials said, blaming it on conservative radicals opposed to female education.?
Since the 2001 toppling of the Taliban, which banned education for women and girls, females have returned to schools, especially in Kabul.
But periodic attacks still occur against girls, teachers and their school buildings, usually in the more conservative south and east of the country, from where the Taliban insurgency draws most support.?
"We are 100 percent sure that the water they drunk inside their classes was poisoned. This is either the work of those who are against girls' education or irresponsible armed individuals," said Jan Mohammad Nabizada, a spokesman for education department in northern Takhar province.?
Some of the 150 girls, who suffered from headaches and vomiting, were in critical condition, while others were able to go home after treatment in hospital, the officials said.
They said they knew the water had been poisoned because a larger tank used to fill the affected water jugs was not contaminated.?
"This is not a natural illness. It's an intentional act to poison schoolgirls," said Haffizullah Safi, head of Takhar's public health department.
None of the officials blamed any particular group for the attack, fearing retribution from anyone named.?
The Afghan government said last year that the Taliban, which has been trying to adopt a more moderate face to advance exploratory peace talks, had dropped its opposition to female education.?
But the insurgency has never stated that explicitly and in the past acid has been thrown in the faces of women and girls by hardline Islamists while walking to school.?
Education for women was outlawed by the Taliban government from 1996-2001 as un-Islamic.

Salt Levels in Fast Food Depend on Where You Buy It
An order of Chicken McNuggets in Europe might be slightly healthier than one in the United States, in terms of the salt content, a new study suggests.
Salt levels are 2.5 times higher in U.S. McNuggets, compared with those in the United Kingdom, the study found.
In fact, salt levels in fast foods from a number of chain restaurants varied widely depending on the country in which they were sold, the researchers say. In general, salt levels were higher in the United States and Canada than in the United Kingdom and France.
The findings suggest fast-food chains are able to lower the salt content in their food, and are not limited by the current technologies and processes in place, as they claim, the researchers say. "The technical issues are not there," said study researcher Dr. Norman Campbell, a professor in the department of medicine at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. "They already have products that are low in salt," Campbell said.
But McDonald's spokesperson Danya Proud noted that the study used data from 2010, and said that since then, McDonald's has reduced salt levels in most of its chicken products sold in the United States by 10 percent. By 2015, the company will reduce salt levels in all products by 15 percent on average, Proud said.
Wide variation
Campbell and colleagues examined nutritional information from more than 2,000 fast-food items from six restaurants (Burger King, Domino's Pizza, Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald's, Pizza Hut and Subway) in six countries (Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.)
In general, chicken products sold at the fast-food chains had the highest salt content, and salad products had the lowest.
There was great variability in the salt content of similar products sold in different countries. For instance, McDonald's McNuggets sold in the United States had 1.6 grams of salt per 100-gram serving, while those sold in the United Kingdom had 0.6 grams of salt per 100-gram serving.
A Hawaiian pizza sold at Pizza Hut had 1.5 grams of salt per 100-gram serving in the United States compared with 1.1 grams of salt per 100-gram serving in the United Kingdom.
The reason for the variation in salt content of similar products in different countries could not be measured from the study's data, the researchers said. The variation appears to be arbitrary and not linked with people's taste preferences, Campbell said. For instance, although Americans tend to consume slightly more salt in their diets than Canadians, french fries sold in the United States had less than half the salt of Canadian french fries, Campbell said.
"We always look for ways to balance quality and nutrition with the local taste preferences of our customers around the world.?Our recipes can vary by country because our markets work with local suppliers," said Becca Harvy, manager of global external communications for McDonald's.
Cutting down on salt
High salt intake is known to increase blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. On average, nine out of 10 people in the United States consumes too much salt, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If fast-food companies lowered the salt content of their food gradually ? five to 10 percent per year ? the decrease would not be noticed by people's taste buds, Campbell said.
The study relied on nutritional information provided by the fast-food companies, and it's possible this information is not entirely accurate, though several companies are known to use accredited laborites for their food testing, the researchers said.
The study is published today (April 16) in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Pass it on: Chicken McNuggets sold in the United States have a higher salt content than those sold in Europe.

Education | The Facts About Adoption and Foster Care :: By Colby ...
Fact ? Thousands of adolescents who spent their childhood in foster homes have to be sent away when they reach 18 years of age, disappointed and without a family to go home to. The question is arguable as to whether their time in foster care has prepared them to face life maturely.
Fact ? Comparing adoption and foster care, children who have to go in with foster families are sometimes forced to go from one family to another because of financial and other constraints. That means that in the course of their life as foster siblings, they need to accustom themselves to being uprooted, like young plants, every now and then. If adjusting to those conditions is at all possible, has never been proven by any positive effect it has on these children.
Comparing adoption and foster care, although a certain amount of funding is provided for children to go into foster care, the structure of that system has been found to have many weaknesses which will be too detailed to discuss here. Enough for us to know that children who have foster parents usually do not get a physically and psychologically wholesome environment to grow up in.
Fact ? The average population in America for each family has declined to 3.13 persons for each of the 60 million families in 2007 from the 3.76 persons for each of the 26 million families in 1940.
That makes the total family population in 2007 to be 187,800,000 (3.13 x 60 million). On the other hand that figure was 97,760,000 (3.76 x 26 million) in 1940. The total difference is 11,960,000.
The number of families in the US in 1940 was 26 million. In 2007 it went up to 60 million. The difference is 34 million. If we are to assume that all those families have a mother and a father, there are 68 million more parents today than in 1940.
The difference between the number of American families in 2007 and 1940 is roughly 34 million (60 million ? 26 million). Assuming that there are mother and father for all those families there are 68 million more parents in America today than in 1940.
For the sake of argument and strictly in a superficial manner, we see that lately, between 1940 and 2007, America stopped adding children to its registered population. We have 68 million parents more today and have only 11,960,000 more people registered in families.
That is of course, blatantly incorrect. However it is a strong indication that somewhere along the line, the number of homeless and parentless kids has increased geometrically, resulting in those statistics. Also we have to consider that not all families have two parents.
Fact ? Comparing adoption and foster care, today the government is in favor of adoption rather than foster care for homeless children. This is obviously because the kids have a better chance to develop as they should when they become permanent member of a family. The subsidies granted to children who are adopted extend all the way into the pre-adoption processes; the home studies, the court fees and others. Besides that there are also post-adoption funds.
If you have been thinking of adopting children, you should take some time to visit an organization or website that can assist you in reaching this very worthy dream.

Brother AirScouter glasses bring augmented reality, unsightly add-ons to your face
Head-mounted displays may be all the rage as of late, thanks to Sergey Brin's own recent fashion choices, but the space is hardly new. Brother, for one, has been in the game for a while now, with its AirScouter glasses, and before fellow printer-maker Epson steals all its glory, the company wants you to know that it's got some new wearable augmented reality on the way. The AirScouter WD-100G and WD-100A are being targeted toward business users, allowing workers to get all of the relevant information from their computer, without staring at a proper monitor -- of course, you're going to want to use the included USB cable to tether you to that PC. The glasses do SVGA images in full color over an eye, while the other eye remains unobstructed, keeping you relatively aware of your surroundings -- best of all, you can choose the eye. The new AirScouters will be available in Japan this summer for a pricey ¥199,800. But really, how can you put a price on looking like the business casual version of the Terminator?

New project to save red squirrels
A new project has begun to help save red squirrels in north-east Carmarthenshire.
The red squirrels here form one of only three key populations left in Wales and the last in the south of the country.
The Mid Wales Red Squirrel Project has received ?12,000 funding from Environment Wales to help support conservation.
The unique nature of the Tywi forest has enabled them to survive here longer than in the rest of south Wales.
Isabel Macho, biodiversity officer with Carmarthenshire County Council, said: "We are really lucky still to have red squirrels in Carmarthenshire and their protection is one of our priorities."
New funding has allowed the project to undertake a large survey of the Cothi and Gwenffrwd valleys to assess where squirrel activity can be observed and to involve landowners in red squirrel conservation.
It has also supported a programme of grey squirrel control that has been targeted to maximise the benefit for red squirrels in their core habitat.
Dr Lizzie Wilberforce of the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales went on to explain, "Unfortunately, grey squirrels aren't native to Britain and have more or less replaced our native red squirrels throughout Wales."
Grey squirrels are much larger, out-compete reds for food and carry a disease called squirrel pox, which is fatal to red squirrels.
Huw Denman, a private forester and member of the red squirrel project, said: "Small changes to the way woodlands are managed, like altering the proportions of tree species you plant, can make a huge difference to red squirrels survival."
Working with local landowners, the project hopes to create a better future for red squirrels in Wales.
