As a librarian, you may receive reference requests about genetic disorders, protein sequences, or bioinformatics even if these subjects fall outside of your area of expertise.? Luckily, you don?t need a science degree to help guide your users to appropriate molecular biology resources and educational materials.

Explore these educational resources from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and other National Institutes of Health (NIH) agencies to expand your scientific vocabulary and increase your understanding of current topics in molecular biology:

• The Education page at genome.gov from the National Human Genome Research Institute provides Fact Sheets about science topics, education resources for teachers, videos about careers in genetics, and the popular Talking Glossary of Genetic Terms reference tool with illustrations and animations
• A Science Primer from the National Center of Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at NLM gives an introduction to the concepts and fields of science underlying the NCBI resources, such as genome mapping, phylogenetics, and microarray technology
• Genetics Home Reference from the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications at NLM presents consumer-friendly information about genetic disorders and related genes, chromosomes, and molecular processes

NCBI offers a daunting array of bioinformatics tools used by all kinds of researchers.? Their databases contain information on organisms, gene and protein sequences, genomes, chemicals, biomedical literature, and much more.? However, NCBI also provide users with several ways to get to know their resources.

Being bilingual wards off symptoms of dementia

New research explains how speaking more than one language may translate to better mental health. A paper published by Cell Press in the March 29th issue of the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences examines how being bilingual can offer protection from the symptoms of dementia, and also suggests that the increasing diversity in our world populations may have an unexpected positive impact on the resiliency of the adult brain.

"Previous studies have established that bilingualism has a beneficial effect on cognitive development in children," explains lead study author, Dr. Ellen Bialystok from York University. "In our paper, we reviewed recent studies using both behavioral and neuroimaging methods to examine the effects of bilingualism on cognition in adults."

Dr. Bialystok and colleagues discuss the intriguing finding that the need to monitor two languages in order to select the appropriate one recruits brain regions that are critical for general attention and cognitive control. Using these cognitive control networks for bilingual language processing may reconfigure and strengthen them, perhaps enhancing "mental flexibility", the ability to adapt to ongoing changes and process information efficiently.

Studies also suggest that bilingualism improves "cognitive reserve", the protective effect that stimulating mental or physical activity has on cognitive functioning in healthy aging. Cognitive reserve can also postpone the onset of symptoms in those suffering from dementia. This is supported by studies showing that bilinguals experience onset symptoms of dementia years later than monolinguals.

"Our conclusion is that lifelong experience in managing attention to two languages reorganizes specific brain networks, creating a more effective basis for executive control and sustaining better cognitive performance throughout the lifespan," says Dr. Bialystok. "It should not be surprising that intense and sustained experience leaves its mark on our minds and brains, and it is now clear that the bilingual brain has been uniquely shaped by experience."

Statins, Cholesterol & Your Health | Fitness Coach Mark

Statins and Your Health

Thirty six million Americans take a statin every day, generating annual sales of 26 billion for the manufacturers, and making two statins ? Lipitor and Zocor ? the top two best-selling drugs in the USA. Numerous doctors are coming forward and taking a different stance on statin usage.

Osteopathic physician Dr. Joesph Mercola has stated the following, ?That these drugs have proliferated the market the way they have is a testimony to the power of marketing, corruption and corporate greed, because the odds are very high? greater than 100 to 1?that if you?re taking a statin, you don?t really need it.?

Is Dr. Mercola alone? Hardly! In fact, way back in 1977 five studies came to the conclusion that total cholesterol is a not a risk factor for heart disease. What about the touted ?bad? LDL cholesterol (that actually serves beneficial roles in the body)? The same studies showed that LDL is marginal at best for predicting heart problems, and that your Triglyceride:HDL ratio was the best predictor of heart disease.

In fact dozens of studies show that low levels of cholesterol (below 150) increase our risk of cancer seven-fold, and levels below 160 can increase one?s risk of stroke and mental diseases. To me this makes perfect sense as our brain is heavily dependent upon cholesterol to properly function. More than twenty studies show that seniors with high cholesterol live longer than those with low cholesterol.

Dr. George Mann who is part of one of the longest running trials spanning three generations describes the cholesterol topic as, ?Greatest scam in the history of medicine?.

The question begs to be asked; if total cholesterol is meaningless for heart health, why are statins prescribed, and do they actually show to be of benefit? Dr. Dwight Lundell, heart surgeon who has performed over 5,000 heart surgeries explains what the research actually shows behind statin medications:

• Do modestly lower heart attack rates in middle-aged men with heart disease
• DO NOT lower death rates in men who do not have heart disease
• DO NOT decrease death rates or heart attack rates in women
• May not be beneficial due to cholesterol lowering effects, but are anti-inflammatory

Whether or not a statin should be prescribed to you is easy, just look at the first three bullet points above. Which category do you fall into?

What about the side effects of statin drugs? I could devote a whole article to these, but in short they include: memory loss, increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart failure, muscle aches and pains and tendon/ligament damage. Some of the side effects can be lessened by discussing Co-Q10 (better yet Ubiquinol) supplementation with your doctor. Statin medications can deplete Co-Q10 levels in the body by 50% in just thirty days. Co-Q10 is vital to every cell in your body for energy production and especially for your heart.

To summarize, statin drugs carry a host of side effects and are proven to only be effective for an extremely small percentage of the population. The fact that they are anti-inflammatory leads me to question, are there safer alternatives out there that can accomplish the same thing? Be in charge of your health and work with your doctor to come up with the best strategy to improve your health. Very rarely will the best answer be in a prescription bottle.

9 Foods Prevent Alzheimer's disease

Eating a healthy diet can lower the risk of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and Alzheimer's disease.

The National Institutes of Health recently said there is some evidence that food, diet, or lifestyle can prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Here are nine foods that according to the researchers were able to keep the entire body including the brain to stay healthy.

"These data suggest that eating foods high in vitamin E include vegetable healthy salad dressing oil based, beans, peanut butter, and whole grains can lower the risk of getting Alzheimer's, "says Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology Department of Internal Medicine Rush University, Chicago.

Vitamin E is a source of powerful antioxidants that may help protect neurons or nerve cells.

In Alzheimer's disease, neurons in certain parts of the brain begin to die causing cognitive impairment.

Fish
Salmon, mackerel, tuna and other fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including acids docosahexaenoic (DHA).
"In the brain, DHA has a crucial role for the normal functioning of neurons," said Morris.

Another plus, the more often means eating fish can reduce the consumption of red meat and other forms of protein are high in saturated fat can lead to clogged arteries.
Greens

Kale, collard greens, spinach, and broccoli are rich sources of vitamin E and folic acid, Morris said.

For example, one cup of raw spinach contains 15% of daily intake of vitamin E, and 1/2 cup of cooked spinach contains 25% vitamin E from your daily consumption.

Exactly how folic acid can protect the brain remains unclear, but perhaps with lower levels of amino acids known as homocysteinein the blood.

High levels of homocysteine can trigger the death of nerve cells in the brain, but levels of folic acid to help break down homocysteine.

Content homocysteine High is also often associated with an increased risk of heart disease.
Avocado

Creamy fruit is also a rich source of antioxidant vitamin E.
According to research conducted by Morris and colleagues showed that a diet rich in vitamin E include avocados, which are also high in antioxidant vitamin C can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Sunflower seeds

Seeds, including sunflower seeds, is also a good source of vitamin E.

One ounce of roasted sunflower seeds contain 30% of the recommended intake for your daily diet.
Peanuts and peanut butter

Although both are high in fat, peanuts and peanut butter tends to be a source of healthy fats, but they also contain vitamin E.

Both of these foods can help keep the heart and brain stay healthy and function properly. Other good choices are almonds and hazelnuts.

Red wine / Red wine
Research has shown that people who consumed red wine and other types of alcohol in moderate amounts can reduce the risk or likelihood of Alzheimer's disease.

Berry Fruit
Recent research presented at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston found that blueberries, strawberries, and acai fruit can help keep cognitive decline by keeping the natural mechanisms of the brain, which decreases with age

Machine Gun Kelly Fought 'Wild Boy' Initially

'Maybe I should just hate every song I'm about to release,' MGK tells MTV News about his Half Naked & Almost Famous single.

Machine Gun Kelly relishes the underdog role, but the Cleveland, Ohio, rapper racked up another serious win on Tuesday (March 20) when he dropped his Half Naked & Almost Famous EP on Bad Boy Records. The five-song digital release marks MGK's first major-label release and serves as a warm-up for his official debut LP.

Tracks like the riot-starting "Warning Shot" and the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League-produced and soul-bearing "See My Tears" help balance out the quick fix, but the EP's anchor is its first single, "Wild Boy." Initially MGK was skeptical about leading his charge with the Waka Flocka-assisted track, but Diddy talked him into it. "He was the one who encouraged 'Wild Boy,' he encouraged the whole thing. I was like, 'Nah, no way, we gotta go serious with the serious stuff right now,'" MGK told MTV News during a January sit-down. "If we would've went that route, I would've fizzled off real quick"

Kells was down on the Spiff TV-directed video as well after a miscommunication between Waka and his mom/manager Deb Antney almost halted production. "We had all these initial plans, but none of them fell through," he said. "It was almost a wrap on it because Waka's mom didn't tell him that he had a video shoot today. So I was like, 'Come on, hurry up,'... He was like 'Video shoot? What are you talkin' about?' "

Waka eventually made it to the shoot and in the end everything worked out. Now, MGK understands the value of strong lead single. "I accept it. I totally accept it. I accept what it does for the people in the crowd and I accept what it did for my recognition."

In fact, thanks to "Wild Boy" and the tons of touring MGK does, the MC was able to gain enough support to be able to release Half Naked & Almost Famous and its accompanying documentary. "Maybe I should just hate every song I'm about to release," he joked.

Cook County Recognizes NCH Manager ? Northwest Quarterly

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS ? A longtime manager at Northwest Community Hospital was honored today as a 2012 Unsung Heroine by the Cook County Commission on Women?s Issues. Maureen Seleski, who manages Senior Services for the Arlington Heights-based hospital, was presented the award at the Chicago Cultural Center.

Her recognition stemmed from a nomination made by Arlington Heights Village President Arlene Mulder, who wrote in part, ?Maureen Seleski approaches every cause with passion. She works tirelessly on senior transportation, service accreditation, hospice and respite issues. Maureen champions the frail elderly, women?s health and the disadvantaged.?

Although known for senior citizen advocacy, Seleski served five years as a foster mom for infants. Her nursing experience inspired her to make that commitment to build a solid foundation for numerous children.

Helping others and staying involved in the community is second nature to Seleski, who has worked at NCH for 20 years. She is a founding member of Women In Need Growing Stronger (WINGS), Access to Care (medical care for the working poor and underinsured), Township Riders Initiative Program (TRIP) and the northwest suburban Senior Celebration Day. She was the first female member of the Arlington Heights Lions Club, and is board president for Escorted Transportation Services/Northwest, which arranges volunteer transportation to get the frail elderly to medical appointments.

?Maureen never hesitates to share her time and talents to make a real difference in the community, and that speaks volumes about the type of employee she is as well,? said Bruce Crowther, NCH?s president and CEO.

Seleski has been a member of the Arlington Heights Senior Citizen Commission since 1992. She also is involved with the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago?s Health & Wellness Committee, Northwest Suburban Transportation Consortium and Northwest 2020 Human Care Council.

The Cook County Commission on Women?s Issues advises the Cook County Board on matters of concern to women and girls. The group?s activities span a range of issues that include violence, child care, economic equity, development of girls, and women?s health.

The company behind the Pogo Sketch is now teasing a pen designed to work with the as-yet unannounced iPad 3. The stylus, codenamed "Project Blue Tiger," is pressure-sensitive, and pairs with the iPad over Bluetooth 4.0.
